The narrator in the early version is reminiscent of a nineteenth- century protagonist, romantic and awkward at times, with a strong sense of justice, something from Conan Doyle or Bram Stoker; the later version is definitely Maugham, an observer, a traveller, who, like a sponge, absorbs as many stories as can be wrung out of the very air he breathes. As the original Illustrated London News may not be easily come by, it can be read in Seventeen Lost Stories.
